Cyclone Alfred is bearing down on Southeast Queensland and it is the first time in 30 years we have had to worry about such a huge storm.
That being the case, it is a good time to remind members what they can do if their business is impacted by the cyclone.
- If you are forced to close because of building damage, loss of power, flooding, or any other storm related incident, and you are unable to gainfully employ your staff for a period of time, you are able to stand them down without pay until such time they can return to work AND you have viable work for them to perform. We have developed a “Notice of Stand Down” to send to your staff in these circumstances. This resource is available to download from the Members Portal. Log in here; or
- If there is no stoppage of work at your business, but your staff are not able to attend because they are isolated by flooding or for some other reason, you are not obligated to pay them. There is no automatic right to paid leave in these circumstances including accessing accrued annual leave or long service leave. There may be an entitlement to Personal/Carer’s Leave depending upon the circumstances, however this should be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Please note that whilst you are not obligated to pay staff, or grant paid leave from accruals, the importance of looking after your valuable staff cannot be overstated. Please consider carefully what your business can offer and take appropriate steps to ensure your staff are supported as much as possible.
Finally, remind your staff that their safety is not only the first priority, in these circumstances it is the only priority. Staff must not be expected to drive through flooded waters, work in dangerous conditions or take any unnecessary risks whilst at work or driving to and from work.
Please stay safe and we look forward to helping all members develop resilience in their businesses to these increasing challenges.
