The 35th Official Great Aussie Pie Competition took place this week at Fine Food Australia in Melbourne at MCEC. More than 1500 pies, sausage rolls, and pasties where judged by sixteen of Australia’s most dedicated pie connoisseurs to deduct the winners of five major titles, 14 gourmet sub-categories, and countless gold, silver, and bronze medals.
From a judge’s perspective, the overall quality in the 35th Official Great Aussie Pie Competition was outstanding. Pies, sausage rolls, and pasties—the quality was consistently high. The pies boasted perfectly flaky pie tops and light tender pie crusts with rich, flavourful fillings, while the sausage rolls exhibited balanced seasoning and crisp, well-baked pastry. Many pasties were a celebration of tradition, with hearty fillings and excellent pastry work. The entries demonstrated excellent attention to detail, with many bakers achieving the difficult balance between robust flavours and delicate textures.
The variety was truly impressive. In the meat pie category, while classics like beef and steak prevailed, we saw inventive options featuring lamb, chicken, and game meats. With plenty of vegan and vegetarian entries. Some bakers incorporated unique flavour combinations like blue cheese, chili, or smoked meats, offering a fresh take on traditional recipes.
The sausage rolls entries in the 35th Official Great Aussie Pie Competition ranged from traditional beef/pork mince to more experimental options like chorizo, spiced lamb, and vegetarian versions. The pastie category entries featuring the classic beef and vegetables fillings.
The competition attracted a substantial number of entries, with more pies, sausage rolls, and pasties than previous years submitted for judging. Despite the large volume, each entry was carefully assessed for presentation, pastry quality, filling flavour, and overall execution. The sheer number of participants is a testament to the growing enthusiasm within the baking community.
“Overall, the show was a resounding success, showcasing not just the technical skills of the bakers but also their creativity and passion for evolving these much-loved staples of bakery culture. We look forward to what next year’s competition in Sydney Fine Food will bring!” said Dean Musgrave, Senior Judge – Meat Pie.
The competition in it’s 35th year remains focused on improving the standards of pies, sausage rolls, and pasties throughout the country. Each entry receives valuable feedback from the judges to help with improvements to their pies, sausage rolls, and pasties.
“Every year our entry numbers increase, and our judges and pie crew put in a massive effort to get through them all. I’m extremely proud of the professionalism and dedication shown by all as we continue to contribute to the standard of pastries throughout the country,” said competition organiser Danielle Lindsay from the Aussie Pie Council.
This year the professional judges had assistance from Shaun Pyne (Pyney’s Pie Reviews), Reyan Fernando (SmokengrillGuy), and award winning pastry chef Anna Polyviou. Guest judges provide external perspective and specific expertise to the process of judging. It’s also a great opportunity to
